These huge excavators are ideal for digging deep ditches and to prepare the foundation of a building. They are used in open mining to load huge rockers. The cup which it digs with may weigh 3 tons and can excavate 3,6 cubic metres of ground and gravel.
Before you begin
The most complicated element of the drawing is the hydraulic arm of the excavator. Focus and draw its shape in the first and second step then the details are easy to be added on.
Sketch the added lines with the help of a ruler and a face watch. If you want, draw their position using your thumb and a pencil. Softly drawing, sketch the shape of the cup, the small circles and the ellipses for the arm. Outline the shape of the excavator’s body. Add the circles and the outlines for the chassis. Sketch the base, a rocky hill.
Softly draw the other lines for the arm. Now draw or sketch the hydraulic unit A. Add the details for the first and second elbow. Draw or sketch hydraulic unit B. Sketch hydraulic unit C and the 3rd elbow. Add details to the cup, and the teeth. Sketch the additional lines for the cabin and the body including the tracks. Add the details for the chassis and the second row of tracks from the rear.
Erase the useless lines and underline the outlines. Outline the details for the three hydraulic units, for the elbows and the arm. Draw the hoses next to the first and second elbow and add rivets and outline to the cup. Add outlines for the arm and the tracks. Underline the shape of the body, the cabin and the tracks. Add two small exhaust pipes on the upper part of the engine. Sketch the smoke clouds and begin to add volume to the drawing using shadows.
Underline the details with the help of sharp pencil. Use flat shadows, hatching and outlines to create different details for the surfaces. Sketch the driver and the interior of the cabin. Add tones to the windows and darken the chassis and the tracks. Build a rocky base and a gravel landscape. Add ground in the cup and softly tint the smoke. Add tracks on the ground and darken the back of the equipment.
Don’t add too much pressure on the pencil when you draw background objects.
Used for excavations and not for velocity, this super car weighs almost 85 tons, yet it has a maximum speed of 4,4 Km/H. You would probably go faster than this!
