One of the best things one can get in life is friendship. And we’re talking about that pure and strong bound between 2 individuals. Well, the unique and beautiful moments you live with someone will always be part of you and of your memory. Unfortunately, things don’t always go the way we want. And sometimes, people lose their friends.
This is what happened to artist Frederick McSwain who lost his friend, Canadian artist and designer Tobias Wong who died at the age of 35. But this unfortunate event led to what we see in the image above: a portrait that is worth a thousand words for what it stands for.
What McSwain did after losing his friend was to make extensive use of his creativity and of the moments he spent with his friend to bring such a tribute to him. So, he thought that a portrait would be the best way to keep the memory of his friend alive. Not any kind of a portrait, though.
The artist took no more no less than 13.138 dice and recreated his friend’s face. The number of the dice he used is the number of the days Tobias lived. An incredible portrait that is a symbol of what the two friends had together. This piece of art was part of the BrokenOff BrokenOff exhibition at Gallery R’Pure in New York City. The portrait was not suspended on a wall but created and put down on the floor where people could almost interact with it.
Why would the artist go for dice? Well, he says that a stranger approached Wong once and asked him for a cigarette giving him a six-sided dice in exchange. This awe-inspiring portrait is also a tribute to Wong’s style of design and conceptual art. And we can only really stay in awe of it!
