Well, some say that originality usually means not going the same direction trends go. Still, this may sound a bit far-fetched. Are all designers who follow trends not original? That makes for quite a debate. If we’re to focus on trends though, only hearing about them will make many designers just back into a corner. Following trends means not innovating yourself most designers would say. And that further means that this way you won’t reach your full potential.
Many clients want originality. Even more of them want you, as a designer, to work at the height of trends. Therefore, knowing in advance what style or way of working will be popular in 2013 will increase your chances of extending your range of clients and of getting better work. Now, according to several creative professionals, graphic design trends in 2013 will include acid visuals, animated GIFs and geometric design among others. Thus, we’ve gathered them here so you can get an idea of what this year will look like when it comes to graphic design.
Also known as cinemagraphs, animated GIFs have re-emerged last year and are said to thrive in 2013 being one of this year’s most dominant designs. No wonder why. Everybody loves to see them. Well, last year some of them haven’t been that much of a great work but hopefully, this year things will evolve and we’ll get to see the ultimate in animated GIFs.
Nostalgia for time past and for how nice things used to be many years ago is present in the graphic design environment this year. Retro style will kind of be everywhere in 2013 or at least in many places. This vintage and retro frenzy actually started last year and is said to continue this year. Using past as a source of inspiration isn’t new when it comes to designers. As long as designers had a past to look into, they very often turned to it. And as rumors have it and some professionals confirm, 2013 will be home to many vintage textures and retro designs.
80s and 90s visuals
Well, if you’re not that much into retro stuff, then we may have a piece of bewildering news. According to some graphic designers, this year will be an explosion of acid visuals. You know, those acid-style 80s and 90s visuals we used to see in videos will come to prominence this year. There have been some interesting attempts at mashing such visuals already. Let’s see what we get in the next months.
Geometric and minimalist designs
2013 is expected to be the continuation of some trends that thrived last year. Among these, we have the geometric designs that turn designers’ attention to what means basic shapes, minimalism and simplification. And why do I get the feeling that this trend will kind of become a hit? Most probably because minimalism is a top trend lately and many will go for it. Simplicity equals “less is more”. So…
In a world where hand-writing and hand-drawings tend to be shadowed by all the novelties and facilities of digital work, it may sound just crazy to go for hand-drawn illustrations. Well, there are well-known illustrators who believe that 2013 will be the year to bring hand-drawn illustrations to its top place. And many of them have already started to incorporate original, unique hand-drawn illustrations into their designs and move away from stock graphics thus giving their work a more personal touch.
Mix of animation, photography, hand-drawn and digital works
The fusion between hand-drawn and digital work with animation as well as photography will be among those graphic design trends that designers will look for in 2013. Multidisciplinary artists and such versatility are no news but this year, it’s their time to show what they are capable of. And they are of so much!
Simple, one-color graphics
Keep It Simple, Stupid is one way to describe the stripping it back graphic design trend we’ll get to enjoy this year. You’ve probably seen that many well-known brands redesigned their brands in a very minimalist way last year. That was just the beginning as simple, even one-color brands will get great attention this year. No wonder why. They fit anything, from solid blocks of color to rich and busy designs and photographs. With simple logos, you can put everything behind whereas busy and tiresome logos require the rest of the design to be simple. Still, it all depends on the designer’s creativity, originality and ingeniousness of combining elements.
Bold, bright and vibrant colors
Well, another design trend to pay attention to in 2013 is the bold and bright colors. Some color could actually use! Intense shades or contrasting hues is what 2013 will look like. And here at graphixarea, we don’t mind it! Not at all!
